In December, 1997 I established what I call “Prayer and Planning” retreats.  I have done these retreats twice a year faithfully for 14 years.

I get away for two nights in July and December.  These times prepare me for the fall and the new year.  I pray, plan, read Scripture, read a book, work on my goals, core values and life purpose.  Back in 2008 I started to bring Jana with me. This has been a big bonus.  This has become a very important time for the two of us.    I love  it.

Over these 14 years I have developed seven core values.  Here they are:

Seven Core Values

1–Spiritual Fervor–I love God with all my heart (compassion), soul (wonder), strength (energy) and mind (intellect).

2–Lifelong Learner—I am a learner.  I love to grow.  I love to change.

3–Indisputable Character—Who I am is more important than what  I do.

4–Family Legacy—My wife and two girls are the centerpiece of my life.

5–Authentic Relationships—I build authentic relationships by being transparent and intentional.

6–Wise Stewardship–I honor God in every spending decision I make.

7–Physical Health—My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.  I take care of God’s house

Question: Why is getting away essential for personal growth?

    Troy,

To be alone with God, a person must to know how to be honest with ourselve. This is a time for reflection on past and looking for inspiration for a future. A leader of the organization must see a future when is destiny and know how to help followers on the journey. In summary, any leader has responsibility to act wisely and to show the way for those who are lost their focus and orientation.
