In the next 40 days—I am asking you to become a fire hose of compassion in this Seattle Region.

People are hurting.

So many have lost their jobs.

Single moms need a hand.

People are desperate for encouragement.

Families need someone to “adopt” them!!

If you have a home church, partner with your pastor in compassion.  If you live out of state, find a way to serve your community. But perhaps you have no home church and you live in the Seattle area– I would love to have you help me accomplish these nine practical and tangible goals!!!

Proverbs 31:8-9 says..

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
  Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

James 1:27 says…

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

In the next 40 days…Let’s speak up for the poor and needy.  Let’s demonstrate to this region what true religion is all about.

Here is what I need from YOU:

#1:  1500 Turkeys!

We asked the Maple Valley Food Bank and The Salvation Army Food Bank in Renton, “How many turkeys will you need this holiday season?” They said 1500 will fill all their requests.  I need your help to provide these turkeys for these two food banks. Bring the frozen turkeys to either campus on November 20th.

# 2:  1000 Bags of Groceries.

Along with the turkeys, the Renton and Maple Valley food banks need groceries. My goal is to give them 1,000 bags on November 20th. You can pick up a bag at New Life anytime throughout the week.

#3:  800 Christmas boxes for hungry kids.

We are partnering with Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child is a way to help kids in Third World countries to experience the joy of getting a Christmas present—and hear the gospel of Jesus Christ as well!

If you have kids, use this as a practical way to involve them. You can pick up a Christmas box at either campus on Sunday!

#4:  100 Growth Groups serving.

At New Life our growth groups exist to serve this world in a missional way. This next 40 days, our growth groups will adopt families, serve organizations and be the hands and feet of Jesus to this world.

#5:  300 gifts for Vision House & Maple Valley Food Bank.

From November 20th-December 11th we’ll have a giving wall to collect gift cards & unwrapped gifts to donate through Vision House & Maple Valley Food Bank. Drop your gift card or unwrapped gift in the lobby of New Life any Sunday or in the office any day of the week.

#6:  50 families to “adopt”.

We have over 50 families that need either another family or a growth group to adopt them. Click here to get the information for these families.

#7:  14 Organizations.

New Life partners with 14 community organization all year. I want to encourage you to check out these organizations by browsing their web sites and find a tangible way to partner with them.

Vision House, Vine Maple Place, Salvation Army Food Bank, Maple Valley Food BankRenton Community Supper, World Vision, South King County Food Coalition, Northwest Harvest, Birthday Dreams, Renton Area Youth Services, Catholic Community Services, YWCA, World Relief, Habitat for Humanity.

#8:  1 Benevolence Offering.

During our Christmas Eve services we are receiving a “Benevolence Offering”.  This will help New Life serve people throughout the year (pay utilities, bills, provide food and so many other tangible needs). Our Christmas Eve services will be December 24 at 3:30pm, 5:00pm, 6:30pm and 10:00pm.  Click here to give to the benevolence fund now.

#9:  1 Person!

Do for one what you wish you could do for all.  Find someone during this next 40 days and serve them in the name of Jesus.

So many have asked, “Can I just give money?”  The answer is “Yes”. We will use any of these gifts to serve people.  Click here to give!!!

Every year I get email after email…should Christians celebrate Halloween? I am ok with the questions, but usually it is laced with a harsh tone… “I can’t believe anyone would agree with allowing your kids to go trick or treating”. Our world is hurting. People are facing serious heartache and need a Savior. We are [...] Read more

I read this story today at church. Many people have requested it.  Powerful story from Dr. Anthony Campolo, speaker, author, sociologist, pastor, and passionate follower of Jesus! Pastor Troy __________ A few years ago Tony flew to Hawaii to speak at a conference. The way he tells it, he checks into his hotel and tries [...] Read more

Every organization, church and family has what I call an “Operating System”. An OS determines how decisions are made, priorities are defined and programs are designed. We all have underlying assumptions that manage our leadership or personal hardware. I am convinced that many  churches are trying to do ministry with a “Macintosh Plus” in a [...] Read more

My 18 year-old daughter, Chelsey Jones, is developing into quite a writer. She is actually working on a book for “preacher kids”. Her first chapter looks awesome.   She is hoping to have this done in the next year. In August she left for James River Leadership Campus! (Springfield, Missouri) This last 3 months I [...] Read more

James, the brother of Jesus, made a BOLD statement. I want you to read this carefully. “If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless“  (James 1:26) Ouch!  Worthless Religion! Really, James?  Do you mean this?  If James was writing [...] Read more

Monday, October 10 was a powerful day for me personally.  Around one year ago, I met a guy named Derek Catherall.  (using his name with permission) Derek is a real estate agent.  We initially became friends because of our shared love for real estate.  Most people don’t know this about me…but I enjoy old homes and love a [...] Read more

Last week I wrote a blog on how some cowards mistreated a gay couple in West Seattle.  I got a ton of questions about my blog last week: ”Cowards or Christians“. Here is one of the pushbacks I received from this dialog: “Pastor, shouldn’t the church preach against sin?” I want to be very clear:  The [...] Read more

Sunday night I was watching the news as it reported how a West Seattle gay couple was the target of an alleged hate crime.  Here is an article that provides some details. As I watched, I was disgusted at the treatment of this gay couple by so-called “Christians.”  The news reported how the suspects slashed the [...] Read more

I have people ask me all the time why New Life gathers for a night of worship six times a year.  We call it “Simply Worship”. The question comes to me in all types of ways: Some are upset that we don’t do Simply Worship more often Some are concerned this will impact their family times [...] Read more
